CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

SANDRA SAT UP on the single bed, disoriented from her deep sleep. A hint of daylight teased the edge of the window and chased the shadows around the single person lodge. Raz’s cinnamon scent lingered on her shirt, but he wasn’t there. Her body tingled from the dream. The vibrations had started not too long after he left the control cabin. They continued off and on throughout the night, along with the sexual dreams. Her breasts ached. A flutter of need quivered in her stomach. The kiss from yesterday had awakened her senses. Her desires didn’t want to remain dormant any longer, no matter what crisis was on the horizon. The thermal blanket fell to her waist. The cold air should’ve penetrated the thin fabric of her T-shirt, but waves of sensual heat swirled around her. Omega had little information on the side effects of the Nexus accepting a human. Add a pregnancy to her changing body, and her hormones took over.

Cameron and Zach’s discussion about her and her research popped into her head. The three of them had argued for hours on the possibility versus probability of a plant virus infecting a Sixxer or a human.

If I accept these people as aliens, have I gone crazy? What proof do I have other than a virus that infected Paris, but no one else? Which indicated Paris was the alien, or logically the one more susceptible to the virus than the rest of them. Yet, the light and smoke were visual markers that something about these people were different than her, at least for the time being. Her change was coming.

She’d reached a point where her eyes wouldn’t stay open any longer, and Cameron had led her to this tiny cabin for blessed rest. Although, Raz hadn’t been far from her thoughts. After her head hit the pillow, she’d fallen into a fitful sleep. How had morning arrived so quickly? The furniture in the room materialized as the light grew stronger. The one-room cabin had a single bed, a chair and a dresser.

A nervousness rushed through her, and her dream from moments before was now a distant memory as one hundred ideas bombarded her mind. Sandra paced around the room. She rolled on a pair of socks and shuffled her feet into the old shoes Zach had found in the supply cabinet. Other M83 units had left a hodgepodge of items behind in the main cabin. The salve Leon had given her had healed the cuts rather nicely. Zach had called him healer, instead of medic, of the team. She understood quickly that M83 didn’t fool around with paltry human medicines and cures.

The air was crisp, and she rubbed her bare arms. After a quick trip to the outhouse, Sandra shivered in the morning fog. Two other cabins were clustered by hers. One was similar in size to hers, and the other a larger structure. Their quiet and dark nature didn’t fool her. Someone from the team monitored her every move.
